Naxó Loxa, which means “Orange Blossom” in Mazatec, is a coffee cultivated by seven indigenous Mazatec women living in various communities in the highlands of the Sierra de Flores Magón, in northern Oaxaca. This region, highly valued for its coffee in Mexico, is known for using traditional farming methods with little to no agrochemicals.
Productive Landscapes of the Sierra Mazateca
The producers cultivate their coffee using traditional polyculture systems, where coffee plants grow alongside fruit and timber trees. Additionally, they diversify their income and promote food sovereignty in their communities through the cultivation of milpa, an ancestral system where corn is intercropped with chayote, beans, squash, and other crops.
What Challenges They Face
Even though these women cultivate and care for the land, they do not necessarily own it. Their plots are usually no larger than a quarter of a hectare.
In most cases, men are listed as landowners, which limits women’s access to financial credit and reduces their autonomy in managing resources that could improve their living conditions and those of their families.
Some men allow their wives and daughters to use their names for selling coffee, acknowledging in some way the important role these women play in production.

Ensambles Connects with the Sierra Mazateca
- Recognizing the potential of the Sierra de Flores Magón, we decided to implement a local supply chain that would allow us to acquire higher-quality coffees while shortening the distance between us and the producers.
- In March 2021, we established our first regional warehouse and quality lab in Huautla de Jiménez, the main town, to connect with producers.
- Our field team in Oaxaca is led by Osiris Martínez, a native of Huautla de Jiménez and an agronomist. She is responsible for organising and training female coffee producers in agricultural practices, harvesting processes, post-harvest handling, and more environmentally responsible production systems.
- During the harvest season (January to May), our teams from the Instituto Bios Terra and Quality Control set up the best possible infrastructure so that our analysts and cuppers can travel to the coffee origins and conduct physical and sensory evaluations of coffee samples. This evaluation allows each producer to have greater purchasing power and receive fairer prices aligned with the quality of their beans.
- After the analysis, the team provides personalised feedback to each producer, helping them identify areas of improvements for future harvests.
- We are connecting indigenous women with national and international markets.
